Hengan International Group – Investment in Finnpulp

We represented Hengan International Group Co., Ltd, a Hong Kong listed company and China’s most significant tissue and hygiene product manufacturer, in its investment in Finnpulp. With the investment, Hengan became a large shareholder of Finnpulp.   

Finnpulp is planning to build the world’s largest softwood pulp mill in Kuopio, Finland. The total amount of the investment is estimated to be 1.4 billion euros. The basis for all Finnpulp operations is to become the most efficient and modern producer of softwood pulp in the world. The new Finnpulp mill will be the most ecologically sound pulp mill in the industry. According to plans, the annual production capacity will be 1.2 million tons per year.

Hengan International Group, listed in the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong, is a manufacturer of pulp-based tissue and personal hygiene products. Group’s annual revenue is above 2.5 billion euros and it employs around 21,000 people. Hengan is within China’s top ten best known consumer brands and a significant user of long-fiber softwood pulp as raw-material for its about 1.42 million tons annual production capacity of tissue products.

We represented Voima Ventures in the Series A funding round of Aisti Corporation. Aisti’s EUR 29 million funding round will support the construction of its first commercial factory in Kitee, Finland, enabling the company to scale production. Other investors include Maki.vc and Valve Ventures Consortium among others. Voima Ventures is a venture capital fund investing in top scientific deep tech ventures in the Nordics and Baltics. Aisti Corporation is an acoustic tiles manufacturer with sustainability and functionality at heart. Aisti’s acoustic tiles are made from highly renewable wood fibres. With the factory in Kitee, the company plans to achieve a production capacity of 2.5 million square meters annually.

We represented Vapaus Bikes Finland Oy, a company offering employee benefit bikes, in its international EUR 10 million Series A funding round. The investors behind the funding are private equity investors Shift4Good and Superhero Capital Ltd as well as Tesi together with the European Guarantee Fund of the European Investment Bank. The equity-based funding will support the company’s international expansion, software development, platform automation, and the growth of its concept for the second-hand market of bikes. Vapaus Bikes Finland is at the forefront of sustainable mobility services and has been a pioneer in the Employee Benefit Bikes sector since late 2020. It has been ranked among Finland’s fastest growing companies. Shift4Good is an impact venture capital fund focused on the decarbonisation of the transportation sector. Tesi (officially Finnish Industry Investment Ltd) is a state-owned, market-driven investment company that invests in venture capital and private equity funds and directly in Finnish startups and growth companies.

We advised Tesi (Finnish Industry Investment Ltd) in its investment in the heavy duty vehicles company Oy Sisu Auto Ab. With this investment, Tesi became an owner in the company with a share of 24.4 per cent. Sisu Auto is a pioneer in the Nordic market in the development of heavy duty vehicles. Sisu’s core competences are in the product development and production of trucks and military vehicles. Tesi is a state-owned, market-driven investment company that invests in venture capital and private equity funds and directly in Finnish startups and growth companies. The investments managed by Tesi total 2.1 billion euros.
