When I joined Castren & Snellman twenty years ago, I started with the most routine assignments. Since those early days, the Russian market has evolved, and so has our Russian legal practice, and at present my key specialisation is supporting our clients' large-scale cross-border transactions.
Over time, I have gained experience in various business areas and I continue to draw upon this knowledge with each new assignment. In fact, when working on an assignment, I prefer not to confine myself purely to legal matters because – and this is my strong belief – legal counselors are effective only when they understand all peculiarities of the client’s business.
The legal profession in Russia continues to present strong challenges, especially taking into account that our legal system is still undergoing significant development, and I have to learn and adapt to new approaches continually in my work. My work gives me unique opportunities to meet people with different backgrounds, both from business and governmental circles, and I find this the most appealing aspect of lawyer's work.
My core areas of expertise are M&A and PEVC, but I continue to keep myself up-to-date and actively broaden my knowledge and skill in other fields of business law as well, in order to best serve the diverse needs of our clients. I see my role as that of a counsellor finding win-win solutions, rather than merely rigidly confronting the other party, and making legal counsel part of what makes the deal happen and ensuring that everybody is happy. This approach has proven to be effective: we enjoy the loyalty of our long-standing clients and quite often receive cases from those who were at the other side of the table in previous transactions.
